IIT Madras wanted to create a heritage center. A space apart from the history of the institution, its achievements and that of it’s alumni over the years would be showcased. To attract students, visitors and faculty to the center – and since it was not a stand alone building - Glass was induced to visually connect the heritage center with the campus. This created a space quite unlike a typical gallery in that it had no walls.
A system of flexible, hanging panels to display the material was created. Polished black granite on the floor lent a deep, contemplative feel to the space. Like the still, dark waters of a pool, it gave a sense of timelessness and gravity which a typical all white gallery cannot give.
